There are few things as unnerving as flushing the toilet, only for water to starting rising in the bowl. There are worse plumbing emergencies to be sure, but few are a herald of things to come.
Calling a plumber can be quite expensive; plumbing services in Brisbane and across the AU charge a pretty high amount, so the best way to go about with your plumbing is to do what you can to ensure that you don’t have to turn to the plumbers so often.
A few plumbers were generous enough to share some simple advice on plumbing on Reddit, and we’ve found them and listed a few of them here.
Don’t get the paper mixed up
Toilet paper is different from paper towels. Both of them are good for cleaning, but the former is designed so that they dissolve in water, the latter is designed so that they absorb and hold any water them come into contact with. Needless to say, you don’t want to flush paper towels down the bowl.
Use the bin
An extension of the above point. Rather than risk having to call plumbing services in Brisbane or wherever it is you are, just play it safe and use the bin. Simply put, flushable wipes, aren’t.
Flushable cat litter? No such thing.
Know where the shut-off is
It’s a good idea to know where the main shut-off valve is for your whole house, in case of an emergency like a bad leak or a pipe rupture, and you are unable to locate an intermediate shut-off valve to help stop the problem.
Learn how to drain your tank
Periodically draining the hot water tank will remove the sludge that tends to pool at the bottom. This prolongs the life of the unit, and cuts down on the power bill by helping maintain performance. The internet has the procedure, it’s just a matter of taking the time to learn it.
Don’t resort to using chemicals for clogs or buildup. A plunger or a snake are better options, and if you really need something to wash that stuff down, get something that uses natural materials. Draino tends to be made of environmentally harmful materials, which it will also demonstrate to your pipes.
